All you need to know about GATE 2017

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering [GATE] is the only all-India standard examination conducted for post-graduation engineering admission. It also opens opportunities for lucrative jobs in several public sector enterprises and fellowship programs in a research organization. Every year, this exam is jointly conducted by Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institutes of Technology during the month of January or February. GATE is conducted on behalf of National Coordination Board-GATE, Department of Higher Education, and Ministry of Human Resource Development – Government of India.

An aspiring engineer can apply for only one subjects of the 23 listed. Though the candidate is free to choose the subject; ideally it is seen that the discipline of their qualifying degree determines the choice of subject. But the eligibility criteria of the institution must be kept in mind.

Bachelor's or a master’s degree is the primary criteria to be eligible to sit for GATE exams. Together multiple choice questions and Numerical type questions make 60 questions worth 100 marks.  This three-hour exam has two sections – general aptitude and the engineering subject of your choice. There are negative marking for GATE exams but not for numerical ability questions.
